Nothing fancy

Start with a basic wooden box.  You can build one from plywood (as I did), or adapt from a crate or shipping container. I settled on dimensions of roughly 25"x25"x25".  I arrived at this scientific calculation by measuring the heated pad (that would lay on the floor) and the top of Minnie's tail.  I wanted her to have room to walk in the box and turn around without zapping her tail on the metal light bulb shield, but... I didn't want the box to be so large that the light bulb heater would be ineffective.  Note the cutout which was made to facilitate the coffee can light shield.

Hinges

To make access to the interior of the house convenient, we used inexpensive hinges, which served to anchor the house to the base while providing access to clean the inside of the house.

Legs

Ordinary 2 x 4s are used for the legs and cross members for the bottom shelf (feeding area).

Ramp

Access to the house is provided by an angled ramp (1 x 6" board) and fastened to the legs using a board or angle iron.  The ramp also provides exercise and a scratching area.

Feeding Station

The bottom shelf provides storage for wet and dry food and space for an automatic feeder and water bowl.  8

Heated Water Bowl

If freezing temps are a problem, a heated water bowl is the ideal solution.  They are available at most pet stores or discount stores like Wal-Mart.
